Covid-19: Save our soul in Nigeria, Imo State

FEATURED

Following the dreaded coronavirus rampage of the world, where almost [500,000], half a million cases of infections have been reported and about 30,000 death cases have also been reported, according to WHO.

Therefore, considering the rate at which the virus is spreading across countries and interstates, all concerned governments have mandated and made it compulsory for everyone, no matter your class or job, to sit at home, as a measure in curtailing and containing the fast spread of the virus.

For this reason, therefore, some  responsible governments of other countries are being proactive in devising practicable means of how to produce, supply and distribute food items to their citizens to avoid starvation while sitting at home and as well control prices of goods from inflation. These governments, such as USA, UK, FRANCE, SWITZERLAND, etc. make necessary provisions of basic needs for their citizens as they remain indoors.

Coming down to my home country Nigeria, it bothers me to ask, how effective and efficient is the Federal Government approach towards her citizens that are sitting at home? What measures are they taking in ensuring that the people are catered for while sitting at home? Is the government producing and distributing food items that can, at least, go round, sustain and maintain the vulnerable Nigerian citizens nationwide? Do we have enough health care facilities that can take care of reported cases of coronavirus nationwide? The questions are endless.

Recently, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on his twitter handle, expressed his feelings on the sit at home of the people of the State, on his move in containing the fast spread of the virus. As a proactive Governor, he has made provisions for food items such as bags of rice, garry, bread, beans, pepper, drinking water, etc. to be distributed within the State for the vulnerable people in Lagos.

In Imo State, it bothers me to ask, if the State government is making any necessary move like the Lagos State Government, in meeting to the needs of the Imo people? There is panic buying in the State, which is resulting in the increase of food items and drinks. What is the government doing to bring the price hike offenders to book? The people have no one to complain to as the prices of food items continue to increase from day-to-day and the government is paying little or attention to the plight of the Imo people.

In summary, however, as a matter of urgency, we urge both the Federal Government and the Imo State Government, to follow the footsteps of the Lagos State Government in providing food and drinks to Nigerians and the people of Imo State, as we continue to quarantine ourselves in our various households as a measure in curtailing and containing the spread of covid-19. May God keep and protect us.
